Wondering about the the amount of memory consumed globally? The reports said that the amount of stored data grew by 23% a year between 1986 and 2007.
In 1986, majority information are stored in analog videotapes, such as VHS cassettes and other simillar platform. Along with VHS tapes, vinyl LP records accounted for 14% of stored data, audio cassette tapes made up 12% and photography accounted for 8%.
It was not until 2000 that digital storage made a significant contribution, contributing 25% to the data storage total in 2000. And in 2007, hard disk drives held 52% of all stored data, optical storage devices held 28%, and digital tape about 11%. By 2007, 94% of the information stored digitally as indicated in the report .
According ot the report the data comsumes around 1000 exabytes of memory storage. Normally storage had been measured in kilobytes, then megabytes, and now usually gigabytes. After that comes terabytes, petabytes, then exabytes. One exabyte is a billion gigabytes.
Imagine if the all the data has been written to newspaper, it is equivalent to 175 newspaper per person per day around the planet. Or if stored into books, that would cover the entire United States.
How much more in the future, wherein nowadays every individual consumes memory. From cellphones to personal computers. Thi is of another enevitable event in our planet.
